Collective Type
Rich with diversity, unified in purpose
Each year, seniors in the Visual Communication Design (VCD) program at ASU develop a new campaign for their senior exhibition. The exhibition itself explored a variety of social issues through research-driven educational displays, so I wanted the design to be engaging to draw visitors, but also be intentional and allusive to the diverse content being shown.
My typographic poster, titled “Collective”, spoke both to the collection of student work being showcased and the idea of collective effort—something vital in solving large-scale social challenges. I wanted to explore the visual of items being “collected” and thrown sporadically into a container.
Each form represents a unique idea, a student’s individual social issue, or a different aspect of social change. By combining various typefaces, sizes, and colors, I wanted the composition to feel dynamic yet harmonious — finding the balance between individualism and unity. I experimented with different color palettes, typography, and layouts to ensure the final composition wasn’t just a random assortment thrown together, but rather a thoughtfully curated collection of elements.
